Duties:

Diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) cases at a tertiary care center in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Manage complex patients with IBD medically and endoscopically. Conduct endoscopic procedures (outpatient and inpatient) including endoscopies, colonoscopies, enteroscopies, ileoscopies, pouchoscopies, and flexible sigmoidoscopies. Screen for colon cancer in patients with IBD and will manage pre-cancerous lesions. Perform endoscopic stricturotomy for patients with IBD-related complications. Perform therapeutic interventions such as endoscopic mucosal resection, stricture dilation, hemostasis of life-threatening bleeding, polypectomy, variceal banding, balloon dilation, bipolar cautery, BarrX, hemo-spray, foreign body removal, APC. Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings with colorectal surgeons, IBD pharmacists and IBD support staff for longitudinal care of patients with complex IBD.  Present at gastroenterology grand rounds and other lecture series. Teach/mentor University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School students, Lahey residents, and Lahey fellows. Manage and treat all other gastro-intestinal disorders such as esophageal, gastric, hepatic, pancreatic, biliary, small bowel, and colonic diseases in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

Requirements:             

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or D.O. degree or foreign equivalent from an accredited School of Medicine plus completion of an accredited three-year residency program in Internal Medicine and an accredited three-year fellowship program in Gastroenterology with specific training in interventional and medical inflammatory bowel disease. Specific skills/other requirements - Demonstrated Expertise (quantitative experience requirements not applicable to this section): Demonstrated expertise (DE) Endoscopic stricturotomy for patients with complications from severe inflammatory bowel disease such as strictures or bowel obstruction from severe pseudo-polyposis; (DE) Management of highly complex patient with inflammatory bowel disease with complications such as strictures, fistulas, peri-anal disease and abscesses; (DE) Management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease who have failed multiple first-line treatment requiring combination therapy and high dose immune suppression; (DE) Management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease pre- and post-surgery; and (DE) Management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease with concurrent/former cancer diagnosis, heart failure, arrythmias, demyelinating disorder, life-threatening infections such as tuberculosis, cirrhosis and venous thrombo-emboli. Massachusetts Medical License or eligibility for a license.
